Version 0.4.0
← All releases
Version 0.4.0 covers a year of work after 0.3.0, from July 2025 to July 2026. It was deployed to teskooano.space as it landed and tagged afterwards, at the last commit before the 0.5.0 work began.
July 2025: Sol gets real
- Accurate positions from real epoch data. Sol’s planets, moons, asteroids and trans-Neptunian objects are placed from orbital elements at a real epoch, with corrected orbit values and better TNO data.
- Satellites. Artificial satellites from TLE lines, including the International Space Station and the James Webb Space Telescope (with its own model), plus geosynchronous orbits and satellites without orbits.
- Lagrange points and support for hyperbolic orbits, with the interstellar object 2I/Borisov. Comet C/2025 R2 (SWAN) followed in September.
- An asteroid renderer, historical orbit trails, and a date-based timer in the toolbar instead of just elapsed time.
- Rendering a system went from about 3 s to about 500 ms. Label occlusion checks and capability-based quality settings made big systems smoother.
- Star, gas giant, comet, asteroid and terminator lighting shaders were all reworked, and the renderer moved to an orchestrator pattern with dedicated scene, lighting and helper managers.
August 2025: one source of truth
- Planet Nine, as a hypothetical body with its own orbital and physical properties.
- Constants such as AU and scale values moved into a new
@teskooano/data-valuespackage. - Orbit lines became instanced meshes and were rewritten to be less janky.
- Prediction lines, the octree and the simulation loop got faster.
- Camera and controls were split into their own modules, and the state engine was refactored into clearer stores with less duplication.
September 2025: cleaning house
- An action bar in the UI, a refreshed composite engine panel and a cleaner layout manager.
- Fixed binary systems where every star was generated at the origin, a hypergiant bug and duplicate main stars.
- Fixed epochs for dynamic systems and the asteroid belt in Kepler mode.
- Circular dependencies removed, and an
AGENTS.mdadded to guide coding agents around the repo.
January 2026: new planets and faster physics
- Planets moved to a cube-sphere geometry with improved noise.
- Volumetric suns and improved stars.
- Unified lighting uniforms across every celestial shader, with better shadows.
- Barnes-Hut using the octree, tuned for AU scales, with the theta parameter exposed.
- A WebAssembly path for N-body performance, a simpler physics system and fewer allocations per frame.
- Corrected orbital velocities for procedurally generated planets.
- Logarithmic depth scaling and camera limits aligned with the scene scale.
July 2026: tests
- Vitest browser mode moved to the new Playwright provider, and the core-state test suite was unblocked (16 to 48 passing).
